Turning Cardboard Into Rock

This night was very enjoyable, as I went back to my hometown to watch the high school play. It brought back a lot of great memories of when I was in high school. Also, it was nice to be able to visit with my friends again.

Missing my high school and high school friends were two of the first things I had to learn to deal with when I started college. It was hard because I did not know anyone here and I was nervous with everything else. However, afterwhile I got to know more and more people and life became easier. I still miss the high school life at times, but not quite as much as before. Actually, the reverse happens during summer vacation. I often find myself missing my new college friends and college life in general.

Speaking of plays, ours is almost time to be performed. In exactly one week, our play "The Wakefield Mysteries" will be ready for an audience. As a result, the crew has been spending a lot of time trying to get the sets ready. I spent most of the day today working on a set for the fifth scene of the play, which deals with the resurrection of Jesus. The scenery mainly consists of two big rock walls. The rocks are actually made out of cardboard and then painted to look like rocks. While this process may sound simple, it is not. It is very time-consuming and requires a lot of work. The end product looks really cool though.

I do not have too much homework to finish tomorrow, which is extremely nice. I welcome breaks like this, because it is a nice change from some of the stressful weeks that have occurred.

Until next time,

Where has the time gone?

Talk about a quick day. It seems like today just began, and now it is already past 9:00 at night. I am glad though that today is almost done. A typical Tuesday for me isn't as hectic as the Monday that I described in one of my first posts. Here is what Tuesday usually looks like for me:

I have work study in the learning center from 9:00-11:00 in the morning.

Following that, I have my class Integrating Technology from 11:00 to noon.

At noon, I have Mixed Choir. Today was pretty interesting, because it was the first day that we were not allowed to use our music. I did well for the most part, but there are still a couple of sections that I need to memorize. Our choir tour is coming up fast and I hope we have enough time to get everything organized. Today was also the first day that we had the opportunity to view one of the slide shows that will be playing in the background while we are singing. It was very powerful and I think the audience will really enjoy it.

At 2:30, I had play practice. The play date is also looming up fast as well. I tried on my costume today (even the wings) and everything fit well. After this, we had to go outside and practice on the wagon that we will be riding on. The wind was blowing extremely hard today, which made it difficult for us to hear each other. This is one factor though that we have to take into consideration, because chances are likely that the wind will be blowing on performance day.

Finally, I had my honors class, Social Gerontology, at 7:00. While this class may sound intimidating, it is not that bad. I already have my term paper done for it and I am currently in the process of proofreading it. It is nice to have this project done and out of the way.

All in all, I got a lot accomplished today which will make tomorrow less hectic.

Until next time,

Easter = Bloating

Well like the title says, I am stuffed. In the past for Easter, my family has always gotten together at the house of one of my grandparents to eat a big meal. This year was different, as we went to BOTH grandparents' houses. This meant twice the food and twice the stomach cramps. Don't get me wrong. The food was excellent. I just ate more than I probably should have.

Over break, I have spent my time doing homework, practicing trumpet for the play, and trying to keep my dog from chewing up my pants. For the homework section, I am pretty much caught up, which is a good thing as the next couple of weeks are going to be jam-packed full of things to do. As for my trumpet fanfare for the play, I am much more confident in my ability to play it then I was on Wednesday. I have it memorized for the most part and I think that I will be able to play it for everyone at play practice on Tuesday.

I cannot believe that tomorrow is already Monday and the end of Easter break! March is almost over and it feels like I have just begun the semester. It is crazy how fast time flies in college. April is probably going to be my busiest month of the whole year, which means time will go by even quicker. Before I know it, summer will arrive and I will be done with my sophomore year.

Until next time,

Some Great Experience

I received an e-mail today from one of the professors asking a favor of me. She was not feeling well and had planned on reviewing with her College Algebra class today. As their test is on Wednesday, she did not want them to miss this opportunity. The professor asked if I would be willing to oversee the class and review with the students. I agreed to help her and I was told I would be teaching the review at 2:00.

Well, at first I wasn't that nervous. Then as the final hour crept up, my nerves began to eat away at me. I kept telling myself that I would do fine, but I let anxiety take over. When I got into the classroom, there were only a couple of students sitting. My nerves dropped a little here, as I was excepting more students. My expectations came true when more students came in through the door, making the total number of students around twenty. Up shot my nerves again.

However, once I started reveiwing on the board, I realized that I had nothing to worry about. The students were very polite and accepting of me, which I appreciated. It also felt great to be gaining such excellent experience, as I am going into math education. It gave me a little taste of what it feels like to actually teach a classroom full of students.

I feel this experience of mine brings up a really strong point of Mount Marty College. The relationship between faculty and students is one that is very comfortable and accepting. If I would have been at a larger college, chances are very good that the professor would have just had the class cancelled and not done a review. This is not the case at Mount Marty though. The professors really care about the success of the students, and I feel the professor asking me to help out shows this.

From Test to Tournament

Well, I survived another week. This one was pretty hectic as it seemed like everything happened at once. This weekend shouldn't be too busy for me, but there are a lot of activities being offered.

Tonight there is a dance sponsored by the Student Government Association. It has a black and white theme, which should be pretty interesting. They are also offering salsa lessons before the dance starts. I am not sure yet whether I am going to go, as I am not much of a dancer.

Tomorrow, I have to take the CAAP exam. This exam is required of all students who received the South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship. Students are required to take this exam when they have enough credits to be considered juniors. It is pretty similar to the ACT exam. I am not too nervous for it, but I am not looking forward to testing for five hours straight.

Also tomorrow is a Super Smash Brothers Gamecube tournament. They will be having tournaments for beginners and advanced players. A Nintendo Wii will also be setup for people to use when they are not playing in the tournament. I am pretty excited for this, as I have only played a Wii once before and it was a blast! There will also be free pizza and pop offered. College students love free food, so I will definitely be there.

Currently, I am filling out an application for the 2008 orientation team at Mount Marty. Basically, these individuals are the welcome crew for the incoming freshmen. They help the new students move in and get situated. I was an orientation leader last year, and it was a lot of fun. Not only did I get to know a lot of the new students, I also got to know the other orientation leaders a lot better. I recommend this opportunity to any student who is interested in working with people.

Until next time,

Crazy Day

Today was an EXTREMELY busy day for me. I went from one thing to the next. It seemed like everything happened today. I had workstudy, classes, a tour, tutoring, play practice, and other work to do on top of all those things. While I am tired from all of this running, it did make the day go by quickly, which is always a plus.

Play practice today was interesting, as it was the first time we tried rehearsing off script. I did fairly well and had to refer to my script only three or four times. However, I still have a ways to go if I want to be completely free of it. Today was also the first day that we actually practiced outside. That was a total change from the inside practices. We felt like we were shouting at each other to be heard over all the other external noises. A big thing that our director wants us to work on is enunciation of our words. While it sounds funny when we talk, it will make a big difference to the audience's level of understanding. I was also informed today at practice that I will soon have my herald trumpet prop to rehearse with. I still have to come up with some kind of fanfare to play on it which makes me a little nervous.

I spent a majority of my free time today working on a website for my uncle and dad's real estate business. Basically, whenever a new property listing comes in, it is my job to get it placed onto their website. Each listing takes about an hour to completely add, and I received four of them yesterday. Let's just say I have plenty of things to do now in my spare time.

Tomorrow is Wednesday which means I have jazz band practice. I hope I do alright when it comes time to play my solo. I worked on it a few times over spring break, so the practice should pay off. We are also taking a group picture tomorrow that will be used in the program for our choir/jazz band tour. It is coming up quickly, so we do not have much time to get prepared.

Until next time,
-Cody

Larry the Terror

I don't think I've ever had so many scratch and bite marks on my arms before. At my house, we are currently in the process of training our new housedog Larry to behave. When he gets wound up, he likes to bite. You wouldn't think a wiener dog would have that sharp of teeth, but my arms say otherwise. Those things are like needles! To add to the difficulty of training him, he is completely deaf. So we can shout "NO" all we want, but it won't do any good. On the other hand, he has provided my family and I with many laughs.

Well, spring break is officially over which means I head back to Mount Marty today. It seemed like this week just flew by. While the days did go by quickly, I did get quite a bit done. I am further than I was on my research paper and I also got most of my math homework done. It will be nice to not have to worry about all of it when I get back to school.

Looking ahead at this upcoming week, I do not think it will be too stressful. I do get to give a group tour on Tuesday to students who will be visiting the school. I am pretty excited for that. Tours are always fun to give because it gives me a chance to show people why I chose to attend Mount Marty.

Until next time,
-Cody

I Survived!

My spring break trip to Missouri was a success! Surprisingly, we did not get lost like I had thought we would. All in all, the trip there and back was pretty uneventful, even though this meant sitting in a car for about seven and a half hours. (Talk about stiff legs after that drive...) I realized that Missouri is not that different from South Dakota, apart from the fact that many more people live in that state.

While visiting my friend in Missouri, we got a tour of the campus she attends there. It was huge compared to Mount Marty!! I do not know how she finds her way around. I am so used to the friendly atmosphere of Mount Marty. I like the fact that mostly everyone at Mount Marty says hello to each other. It is nice attending a college that has such a feeling of comfort to it. I know that I would never survive in a bigger college like the one my friend currently attends in Missouri.

Now I am back home in South Dakota for the rest of spring break. I am not sure what I am going to do to fill my time besides homework. My town is not that big, so it is sometimes hard to find things to do. I usually end up going over to a friend's house and hanging out. Summertime is a different story, as there is so much more to do. I live only ten minutes away from the Missouri River, so my friends and I go down there quite a bit. We do everything from tubing, to swimming, and even camping. It is a blast! However, it is not summer so I will have to spend the rest of my break finding other activities to keep myself occupied.

Until next time,
-Cody
